Hollis Chatelain – Mary

Mary: – My first five day workshop! I had long admired Hollis’ quilts and was blown away by her massive quilt ‘Innocence’ which I had seen at Houston the previous year. http://www.hollisart.com/gallery_enlarged_view.php?piece_id=259&entry=1

Her quilting is amazing. The workshop was painting with dyes and then quilting. It was great to feel the paintbrush in your hands but definitely not as easy as Hollis demonstrated. Here are a couple of my first paintings.

Then you needed to ‘set’ the dyes by washing and I was a little disheartened to see all that lovely intense colour disappear. It is all in the way you layer up the dyes, obviously I need to learn quite a bit more …

Here’s the same paintings after they have been washed.

Hollis assured us that quilting would change the image.
